Artist Statement

With a background in photography and having grown up in a home with a seamstress mother, textiles and (found) imagery often form the foundation of Pouwelse’s projects.

Through reuse and transformation, she engages in a dialogue about the transience of objects and memories, and about the absurdity of contemporary material culture. Digital and physical realities merge, and materials and objects come together in combinations that exist outside their original context. In doing so, she questions our relationship with objects, images, and memories in an era of overproduction, digitization, and transience.

Pouwelse explores the tension between recognition and disorientation, between humor and discomfort.
